Another carnival dance that has been "restored". It’s long and energetic. As a team we have amended a few figures and just plain dropped a couple. But otherwise it is exactly how Trefor taught it! Collected @ 1980 TO.
Taught by Doug to a Ripley Green Garters workshop in 2010 to the delight of all I'm sure. However one charming and delightful attendee is puzzled that having seen Wakefield out and about during the 2010 season the dance is not a highlight of our displays. OK this one took the better part of two years to get up to performance standard. Then we discovered that the tune has a "run away train" effect on the musicians such that we end up looking like a demented version of the "London to Brighton in 4 Minutes" film from the TV of my youth (younger readers as your grand parents). So basically we now tend to peform selected figures in groups of five when the musicians have been slugged and there is a "Z" in the month.
Having said which other teams have been seen to perform the dance. The cunning ploy is to actually stand still at non critical moments e.g. half the team can take a break during "Failsworth Boys Chain". This is interesting and probably when we get older and grown up we'll look at this option. The main snag being that if we stop it's getting harder to re-start!
