When collected this was a garland dance for carnival Morris i.e. young girls. Then it got restored back to a traditional dance. So we don’t use garlands some of us are not girls and those that are are not - Yeah well work it out for yourselves. The dance has a bit of singing on the end but we changed that. Other than that 100% authentic. Collected @ 1970 TO.
Memories A performance at Shibden Hall some years ago. Rain stopped play so we're driving home. Alan and Doug are chatting as Meg steers the car homeward. "There was something odd about that Newton" says Alan. "Well I'm sure it looked OK" says Doug "Anyway no one would notice a small slip up" "What like you two swapping places in the middle of the dance" pipes up Meg. For years after whenever Newton got danced Alan would drop into the set and ask "You OK there Doug?" To which the invariable response was "I'll start from here and see how it goes".
