Developed in the 1970/80’s by Trefor Owen using figures from North East Manchester that did not seem to fit with the area. Extra bits inserted to produce a really neat dance that we now use as the finisher for a set or weekend. Basically because no matter how knackered you feel, when the tune for this one starts up you get a surge of energy!
Memories The summer 2010 edition of the Morris Federation newsletter had a piece on the Joint Morris Organisation event in Bury St. Edmunds which lamented the lack of a NW dance to match the inevitable "Bonny Green Garters" used to end so many joint morris events. Colin Cater, the author, suggested the classic "Horbury Polka" as a possible solution. So there we are 30 years of dancing and we have a classic dance from the Horbury suite. Can we now start to refer to the Horbury Tradition I wonder? Though the previous edition of the newsletter did carry the notation for ASDA, a variation of the Gisburn Street dance, first tested with the Ripley Green Garters. This really does work but has yet to become a classic. What it needs is a bit of umph and possibly some sponsorship. Any one got any ideas where it might come from possibly a northern based grocer? Or should we look to create a dance using "OBC" as mnemonic? OBC by the way is the Ossett Brewery Company, purveyors of ale to the discerning masses.
Mind you I'm not holding my breath on this one. Trefor did develop "Carr Lodge" as a possible standard NW dance and that hit the wall and stuck like jelly. Will the world ever realise that "Bonny Green" can be a bit like the "Wild Rover" and come to the conclusion that knowing it is not necessarily a reason to do it.
