Gisburn – An alternate to "Bonney Green Garters"
This dance was devised as a massed dance for all abilities in response to a request from the Ripley Green Garters for a Morris Federation workshop. It uses the basic Gisburn Street Dance step up and a set four of the figures. These alternate processional and display figures to allow the dance to progress around the display space, giving the audience an opportunity to see all the dancers. When the time to call a close comes the master/mistress of ceremonies simply intercepts the circling dancers at a suitable point and guides them out of the arena!
The basic unit of the dance is two couples making a foursome. The fours form up in a circular set, whether facing clockwise or anti clockwise is your choice but all should be facing the same way!
The Step Up This is four march steps followed by four single steps then repeated to a total of sixteen beats of the music. The tune used by Wakefield musicians is "John of Paris". Hand movements are arms down at the side for the match steps and up and waving the implement of choice for the single steps.
Figures
Arches - A processional figure using single steps throughout. The lead couple in each of the fours make an arch with their inside arms and mark time as the second couples dance forward under the arch in four beats. The new top couple then repeat the arch as the original top couple dance under and back to the lead position. This is repeated through to come to a total of sixteen beats.
Stars – A display figure using single steps throughout. In the fours make a right hand star and turn for eight beats. Then swing to a left hand star and return to place in eight beats
Diagonals – A processional figure. In four beats all dancers dance forward and diagonally across the set using single steps i.e. they change sides and move forward one place. They then march step forward for four beats. The next four beats is a repeat of the diagonal crossing to get back to your "own" side, and you finish with four match steps forward before picking up the step up again with its four march steps.
Arming – A display figure using single steps through out. Facing you partner across the set give a right arm forward to link in two beats, then swing a full 360 degrees in four beats before pushing back to place in two beats. Then repeat but this time with a left arm lead into the link and swing.
And that’s all there is to it! Repeat ad infinitum using the mnemonic ASDA to remember the figure sequence that comes between each step up repeat. Enjoy!
